Karen Yu to join the team of CMHK as Chief Curator
Contemporary Musiking Hong Kong (CMHK) is excited to announce the appointment of Karen Yu as its Chief Curator effective immediately.
Ms Yu’s appointment marks an important moment of transition for the organization, towards new and professionalized artistic leadership. With the support of the Board of Directors, Ms Yu will leverage her expertise and visions in music, sound, and multimedia collaboration to shape the organization’s programs.
As a percussionist, performance artist and interdisciplinary arts researcher, Karen Yu uses sound-making as a medium to question and subvert the relationship between audience and performer. In explorations of new possibilities in performing arts and concert culture, she has collaborated with a number of artists and musicians, including Ken Ueno, Philippe Leroux, Michael Pisaro, Zihua Tan, Vinko Globokar and Jean-Pierre Drouet. Formerly an artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Yu a co-founder and co-director of The Up:Strike Project, and an Associate Musician of Hong Kong New Music Ensemble.
“I'm honored and excited to be able to bring Contemporary Musiking Hong Kong into a new era of performance and leadership,” Karen Yu said with high hopes. “I believe CMHK has the power to unite artists from different artistic practices, locations, and belief systems, while simultaneously providing a platform for cutting-edge cross-disciplinary works and international exposure. Three years ago, I was introduced to this organization as a performer in Sound Forms, which I am still grateful to be a part of. In my new role as Chief Curator, I look forward to working with the CMHK team, the Board of Directors, and our community of incredible local and global artists to develop, foster, and promote new visionary research and performances.”
The Board of Directors Welcomes Karen Yu on Board
“Karen is one of the most active and innovative musicians of her generation,” commented Samson Young on Ms Yu’s appointment. “Her spirit of adventure and her experience in working across the disciplinary divides are invaluable aptitudes for an organization such as CMHK. I am thrilled that Karen will be leading CMHK into the next funding cycle and beyond.”
Ms Margaret Yang, who spoke on the appointment on behalf of the Board of Directors, commented: “after some deliberation, the board of CMHK has chosen Karen Yu as the next in line to be at the helm to lead CMHK into the next stage. Karen has, since her return to Hong Kong in 2017, proved her dedication not only in her own expertise as a percussion performer but has also shown her innovative and creative sides with her experimental endeavours with sounds explorations in search of new possibilities. Board members who have worked with Karen have found her warm and sensitive as well as sharp and interesting. We have full confidence that she will be able to fit into the shoes of CMHK’s Artistic Director in due course. Meanwhile for the first year, we would trust her with the job of Chief Curator, as her predecessor Remy Siu was. We wish Karen all the best and we look forward to working with her on another successful chapter of CMHK.”
